The Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Awards - 2012


The objective of the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Awards is to recognize students in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry who have shown the potential to become outstanding leaders. This potential may be demonstrated in a number of ways, including participation in student councils or clubs, community organizations, cultural groups, or athletics. Applicants should enumerate their service to others through volunteering or community work. Recipients should have the ability to inspire others to action and to excellence.

Each LOT Award has a minimum value of $5000. Worthy runners-up will be recognized. In 2012 five LOT Awards are available to full-time students in Chemical Engineering:

  • Students in First Year - The ERCO Worldwide Leaders of Tomorrow Award (New in 2012)
  • Students in Second Year - The Professor James W. Smith Leaders of Tomorrow Award
  • Students in Third Year - The Class of 5T9 Leaders of Tomorrow Award
  • Students in Fourth Year - The Troost Family Leaders of Tomorrow Award
  • Students in MASc or PhD Studies - The Professor Douglas Reeve Leaders of Tomorrow Award (New in 2012)

Applications are to be submitted to the Assistant Registrar, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Galbraith Building Room 153 before 2:00 pm on February 29, 2012. Note: students on PEY are not eligible to apply.

The following documents must be submitted by applicants: 

  1. A list of principal activities and honours (including scholarships, prizes, awards, offices held, athletic record and extra curricular interests and activities) with dates.
  2. A signed statement of general interests and activities, plans for future studies, and intentions as to future career. (This statement should not repeat the content of Item 1 and must not exceed two pages double-spaced.)
  3. Transcripts (unofficial are acceptable) of post-secondary grades.
  4. One letter of reference from a University of Toronto member of the teaching staff.
  5. One letter of reference from outside the University of Toronto.

Short-listed candidates will be asked to attend an interview with a Selection Committee. Awardees will be announced at the Department Dinner March 16, 2012.
