Diosady and Godfrey Named to Order of Ontario

Chemical Engineering Professor Levente Diosady and 1962 graduate Paul Godfrey have been named to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest honour.

Diosady was recognized for his pioneering research in food process engineering. He has developed new techniques for fortifying salt with iron and iodine for the prevention of micronutrient deficiency diseases, which adversely affect two billion people worldwide. Tests in Ghana and India resulted in a 30-percent decrease in anemia in children after eight months simply by replacing household salt with double-fortified salt. Professor Diosady is now focusing upon fortifying rice and developing salt that is triple fortified with Vitamin A, iron and iodine or folic acid.

Godfrey is a recognized civic and business leader. Following a 20 year career in municipal politics, including serving as the Chairman of Metropolitan Toronto from 1973 to 1984, Godfrey entered the business world. He served as the Publisher of the Toronto Sun from 1984 to 2000, the President of the Toronto Blue Jays from 2000 to 2008 and has been the President of The National Post since 2009 as well as the Chair of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. In 1979, Godfrey established the Herbie Fund at the Hospital for Sick Children, which finances medical treatment for children from around the world.

The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will bestow the honour at a ceremony to be held on Thursday, January 28 at Queen's Park.
