Students, faculty, alumni, and industry professionals came together for the 5th annual Chemical Engineering Scholars and Leaders reception held at Massey College on October 14.
As refreshments and hors d’oeuvres circulated throughout the night, guests mixed and mingled as they connected with old friends and gained new acquaintances.
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry holds the reception every year to honor and recognize the scholastic and extra curricular achievements of students within the department.
It is an event meant to celebrate not only students’ academic pursuits and achievements, but also those contributions made outside of the classroom.
“We’re very proud when you [students] have success,” spoke Dr. Graham Norval, Lecturer and Associate Chair and Undergraduate Coordinator of the Department. “It’s these kind of events which I love. I get to nominate people; people get awards…So really, congratulate yourself and your successes.”
Among the friends of the Department present were alumni Alec Munro (Chem 5T9) and Bill Troost (Chem 6T7) who continue to support and inspire the “Leaders of Tomorrow” program and former Research Associate and a 2009 recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Science from U of T, Dr. Frank Frantisak. Representatives from such companies as Enwave Energy, ERCO Technologies, Hatch and Suncor were also in attendance.
Explains Tea Tancev, a recent Chemical Engineering graduate who now works for Suncor Energy, “the great thing about events such as these which bring students and scholars together is that as a student, it helps to be able to see where you are going. You get the time to talk to people one-on-one in a friendly atmosphere.”
Indeed it was a successful celebration of students’ efforts, achievements, and hard work. Larry Seeley, President and CEO of Lakefield Research Ltd and member of the Department’s Board of Advisors had these inspiring words to end off the night. “It really is great to see all this energy. Again, congratulate yourselves on making things happen. Remember to always just do what you like, do it well, but most importantly, just do it.”
