Cluster Description
Surfaces and interfacial properties control the performance of materials in areas as diverse as medicine (biomaterials, biosensors, gene chips), electronics, fuel cells and advanced energy research, composites, catalysis, geology, forestry and paper products and environmental science and technology. A diverse group of departmental and extra-departmental members representing these fields (and more) form a network that is involved in the study of surface and interfacial chemistry in order to advance the respective fields.
A new regional facility, Surface Interface Ontario, is housed within the Department. This facility provides core experimental capabilities in imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This facility is linked to other nearby facilities, including the Centre for Molecular Imaging in IBBME which provides scanning microscopic investigation of surfaces, modern electron microscopic and surface characterisation facilities in Materials Science and Engineering, and additional analytical facilities (ANALEST) in Chemistry. This provides a world-class environment to study surfaces and interfaces.
