Welcome from the Undergraduate Coordinator, Graeme Norval
I am pleased both to introduce and welcome you to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry.
Our department is a community of roughly 60 professors, lecturers and support staff, 90 graduate students, and 490 undergraduate students. We are a friendly community within the larger Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. We are large enough to offer a variety of advanced courses and research topics, while maintaining a close-knit community.
This is an interesting time to enter the field of Chemical Engineering. The public is increasingly aware of the issue of global warming and its ties to energy consumption. Material and energy balancing and thermodynamics have been cornerstones of the chemical engineering curriculum for the past century. Environmental engineering has developed from chemical engineering first as a means of treating public and industrial wastes, and now covers waste minimization, soil remediation as well as the development of new technologies to further reduce the impact of chemicals on society. You will be introduced to the field of Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment, themes which will be part of your career, wherever you work. The new field of Biomedical and Biomaterials Engineering is a key focus for this department, and the pace of medical advances is astonishing.
Chem Club, our undergraduate student association, is the hub for entertainment and communication within the department, and organizes professional development, social and sporting events throughout the year . The U of T chapter of the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering (CSChE), also provides important links to industry and research for our students. The Undergraduate Common room in WB238 is a great place to hang out (better than the computer laboratories!).
Over the next few pages, you will find a general description of our Department, its programs, and student life here in Toronto. In the Undergraduate office staff are Mrs. Luisa Gomes and Ms. Jennifer Veitch; they handle questions regarding enrolment and registration, program and course requirements, International Student Exchange, petition forms and generally anything that has to do with your Undergraduate program
Please drop by and see us - you are welcome any time!
